Rest in the Measure of Charity
True rest is not merely absence of labour but the soul's return to God through ordered hours, humble labour, silence, and the refusal to make one's tools into masters.
Francis of Assisi renounced his merchant inheritance to live among the poor, founding the Friars Minor in 1209. His few surviving writings — the Admonitions, the Rules, the Testament, letters and the Canticle of the Creatures — speak of poverty, obedience, peace and the praise of God through creation. The persona uses only his own writings, not the later legends about him.
