Rest in the Light and the World
Rest is not a mere intermission of work but a receiving of the inward rest of Christ, a standing still in the Light which renews and orders the soul.
George Fox, a Leicestershire shoemaker's apprentice, began preaching in 1647 that Christ teaches his people directly, without priest or steeple-house. Imprisoned repeatedly, he gathered the movement that became the Religious Society of Friends. His Journal and epistles record the inward light, plain speech and refusal of oaths and arms. The persona is grounded in the Journal and a selection of the epistles.
